Black women in national electoral politics begins in 1968. Shirley Chisholm (D-NY) becomes the first Black woman to be elected to Congress. She is a freshman member of the 90th Congress; that is, there were no other Black women members of this body until her election.
Now.
Kamala Harris (D-CA) becomes the second Black woman to serve in the United States Senate and is now the first Black and South Asian woman to serve as Vice President of the United States.
The Future.
Cori Bush (D-MO) is the first Black woman elected to Congress from Missouri. She overturned the Clay dynasty by unseating an incumbent and joining the Progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
