“YOU OKAY, SIS?”

Examining the Politics of Black Women in Tumultuous Times

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

How and in what ways are Black women voters navigating, interpreting, and feeling in the current political climate?

What motivates Black women to participate in American politics?

What do Black women seeking office and those in elected positions prioritize in their politics?

METHODS

To better understand the agency of Black women in politics, our research team will use a combination of focus groups, in-depth interviews, and national surveys. This mixed methods approach will provide a more nuanced understanding of Black women’s politics.

THEORY

Black women’s identities mediate their public opinion and political behavior. These identities are constructed through a process of racing gendering that serve to constrain and restrict Black women’s political choices. However, Black women exert agency over their political circumstances.
